Dear McKenzie Lake Families,

Another busy week at McKenzie Lake School.  Our Grade 1 and 2 students had their Spring Concert, and they three amazing performances that ensured students, parents and family members were able to attend their amazing performances.  Ms. Kvicala had students singing about spring and bugs, with butterflies dancing under black lights and fireflies singing in the dark.  We would like to thank all of our staff who contributed to making the Spring Concert a huge success and to everyone that took time out of their day or evening to attend the big event.  Students were very excited to be able to share their performances with so many familiar faces.

McKenzie Lake School was bustling with exciting events and learning opportunities for students this past week. Grade 1 and 2 students wowed audiences with three fantastic performances during their Spring Concert, featuring songs about spring and bugs, complete with captivating visuals like butterflies under black lights and fireflies in the dark. The school extends gratitude to all staff members who contributed to the success of the concert, as well as to the attendees who took time out of their day or evening to support the students.

Grade 4 students in Mrs. Cushon and Ms. Areny’s class were treated to an enlightening presentation on Agriculture in Alberta. During the session, students were fascinated to learn that cows are distinguished by tattoos and ear tags for identification purposes. They were intrigued by the process of weaning calves using QuietWein once they reach 7 months of age. Interestingly, many students expressed a newfound preference for being the youngest siblings after discovering that cows do not recall their previous offspring after giving birth to a new calf. Beyond cattle, students also explored the world of chickens, discovering the diverse array of egg colors they produce, such as blue, influenced by their breed and feather color. Moreover, the presentation underscored the pivotal role of science and technology in revolutionizing agricultural practices, benefiting both livestock management and crop harvesting.

Meanwhile, AM kindergarten students enjoyed an agricultural adventure at Butterfield Acres, where they milked and played with goats, went on tractor rides, interacted with farm animals like a new baby calf and practiced speaking turkey with Tom the Turkey while learning about different aspects of farm life. The school extends thanks to volunteers and the School Council for making this enriching field trip possible.

Grade 5 students are holding one last popcorn sale on Tuesday, April 30, to raise funds for their Salvation Army Social Action project. Popcorn will be available for $2.50 while supplies last.

Sincerely,

Dayna McComish
