Dear McKenzie Lake Families,
This week, our Grade 2 students had an authentic Arctic experience during their field trip to Heritage Park, all while enduring one of the coldest weeks of the year. The adventure began with a presentation about where and how the Inuit live. The students then learned about their food sources and the types of shelters they use, along with the reasoning behind their designs.
The day was filled with hands-on activities, including Cat's Cradle, Stick Pull, sewing mittens, a teddy bear toss, and even harpooning a seal. After lunch, the students took on the role of sled dogs, pulling sleds with their backpacks, as well as searching for Arctic animals in the forest. They also had the opportunity to explore Inuit artifacts, examining both familiar and new pieces. The students made Snow Goggles, built Inuksuk’s, and tried on a blubber glove before finishing the day with an Inuit story.
Meanwhile, Grade 3 students from Mr. McEwen’s and Mrs. Smith’s classes participated in the AMP Community Champions Program during a field trip to the YMCA. They enjoyed roller sled hockey and sledge hockey, where they developed new skills while supporting and encouraging each other. The students also listened to a presentation by a Canadian Paralympic hockey player. Teachers, students, and parent volunteers had an incredible time experiencing new sports together. The other Grade 3 classes will have the opportunity to participate at the end of February. (Click here to learn more about the AMP Program.)
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who braved the cold to support our students on their field trips. Your involvement makes these experiences possible!
A reminder: Next week is a short three-day week for students, followed by an extended weekend. School staff will be attending Teachers' Convention on Thursday and Friday, and Monday will be Family Day.
