Dear McKenzie Lake Families,

Several classes took advantage of the warming temperatures this week, and enjoyed time outside show shoeing.  We will see if there is enough snow left next week, for more classes to try them out.  With the snow melting, we anticipate the school grounds to be icy in the early mornings with emerging puddles and mud throughout the afternoon.  Please ensure your child has appropriate footwear for being outside at the playground and on the field.

Mrs. Mouck has organized an author and illustrator visit for MLS students on the afternoon of February 14.  Local author Jace Jax and illustrator Henry Hama, of Kidsburgh Chronicles will be coming to share their new story The Valentines' Day.  Further information will be shared closer to the date.  Other Kidsburgh Chronicles books include A Halloween Tale and A Christmas Adventure.  This is not their first visit to MLS, so you may have copies of their previous texts in already within the school.

What to Expect in Your Child's Report Card

On January 30, your child's report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child's daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you.

CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:

  • Fall 2022 start:
    • Mathematics (K-3)
    • English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
    • Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)

  • Fall 2023 start:
  • Mathematics (4-6)
  • English Language Arts and Literature (4-6)
  • French Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
  • Science (K-3)

In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.

Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.

Kindergarten Report Cards

Kindergarten teachers will report progress to parents / legal guardians via January and June report cards.

  • In January, progress in English Language Arts and Literature and Math will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card. Other subject areas will be visible online but will be blank (these subjects will not appear on PDF versions).
  • In June, progress in all discipline areas will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card.

2024-2025 Kindergarten Registration

Monday, January 15 families are able to begin registering their children for kindergarten.  Click here for information regarding kindergarten registration.  Please note that you will be asked to note if you prefer an AM or PM kindergarten placement, but this is not guaranteed.  AM/PM class placements will be confirmed after we have determined how many AM and PM classes we are able to accommodate for the 2024-2025 school year.  Further information will be emailed to families once their registration has been processed by the school.  Registrations are not confirmed until all required documentation has been uploaded.

Sincerely,

Dayna McComish
