Dear McKenzie Lake Families,

It was an eventful week at McKenzie Lake School, with the addition of the Grade One assembly and Family Dance taking center stage. The energy among the Grade One students was evident as they eagerly anticipated performing for their parents. Throughout the week, excitement built, culminating in a showcase of their learning through words, song, and art. The talent displayed by the CBE's graduating class of 2035 was impressive, reflecting the dedication and hard work of both students and teachers.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to the School Council for organizing the first family dance in many years. Mr. Sadler, a parent at MLS, served as the DJ and kept the students entertained and dancing all night long with his amazing selection of music.  The effects of the dance were felt the following morning, with attendance showing that many students had expended all their energy on the dance floor the previous night.  Such events are instrumental in bringing the MLS community together, fostering a sense of community and fun for all involved.

During the week, students at McKenzie Lake School engaged in the second presentation from Just Like You, aimed at promoting understanding and inclusivity towards people with disabilities. Kindergarten students were introduced to adapted activities, witnessing through storytelling that individuals with disabilities can still actively participate and play. Meanwhile, Grade 1 & 2 students delved into learning about various disabilities and the importance of inclusive practices, pledging to treat everyone with respect and understanding. Moving up the grades, Grade 3 & 4 students focused on using positive and inclusive language towards individuals with disabilities, while Grade 5 students tackled myths and stereotypes surrounding disabilities. They discussed the impactful lives led by people with disabilities, emphasizing their ability to make a difference in their communities. Through these presentations, students gained valuable insights into disability awareness and the significance of fostering an inclusive environment.

Parents were reminded to sign up for Parent Conferences with their child's teacher through their MyCBE account.  Kindergarten students are reminded there is no school on Thursday or Friday due to conferences, while grades 1-5 students will have school on Thursday but not Friday.

Scholastic Book Fair

Students will be previewing books at the Book Fair on Monday and Tuesday, with sales starting on Wednesday.  The Book Fair will be open to parents on Thursday evening and Friday morning, so be sure to stop by the Learning Commons during conferences.

Sincerely,

Dayna McComish
