Dear McKenzie Lake Families,

During Teacher Appreciation Week, our School Council went above and beyond to show their gratitude for our hardworking staff. With a special delivery of coffee, cookies, and cupcakes, they made sure to treat us to a little extra love and appreciation. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the School Council for their thoughtful gesture and for recognizing the dedication and support our staff provides to MLS students every single day. It means the world to us to know that our efforts are valued and appreciated.

This week, the fourth-grade students from Miss Skunta and Mrs. Cushon’s class embarked on a visit to Lougheed House, a nationally and provincially recognized historic site. Built in 1891, this architectural gem is nestled in Calgary’s bustling downtown, surrounded by sprawling heritage gardens and lush green spaces.

During their field trip, students delved into Alberta’s rich history, immersing themselves in an array of artifacts and engaging in Reader’s Theatre activities. They were enlightened about the implementation of the head tax, a fee imposed on immigrants seeking entry into Canada. Exploring suitcase artifacts became a fascinating exercise as students deciphered clues to determine the country of origin of each individual based on the contents of the suitcase.

The highlight of their visit included a Reader’s Theatre activity, where students took on the roles of various characters in advertisements aimed at enticing different immigration groups to settle in Alberta. Through these immersive experiences, the students gained invaluable insights into the cultural tapestry and historical significance of the region.  Next week Ms. Areny’s class will experience the same field trip, enhancing the grade four curriculum beyond the walls of the classroom.

This weekend, let's take a moment to honor and celebrate all the wonderful mothers and mother figures who play such significant roles in our lives. Whether it's a biological mother, a stepmother, or any other caring individual who nurtures and loves children, let's ensure they feel truly appreciated and cherished. Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to show our gratitude and make these special individuals feel extra loved and valued. So here's to all the moms out there—we hope you feel exceptionally cherished and celebrated this weekend.

School Council and Parents Association AGM Meeting

On Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00pm, the MLS School Council and Parents Association will convene their annual AGM meeting. Comprised of dedicated parent volunteers, both societies share a common goal: to foster a strong connection between the school and the parent and student community, with the aim of enhancing access to programs, resources, events, and overall support for McKenzie Lake School.

The AGM meeting offers an opportunity for parents to actively participate by casting their votes for individuals to fill roles for the upcoming school year and engaging in discussions regarding the planning of school events and fundraising initiatives. All parents or guardians of MLS students are invited to attend the virtual Council meetings and contribute to the collective efforts aimed at enriching the school experience for students and families alike.
