Dear McKenzie Lake Families,

On Friday, our Grade 1 students hosted a fantastic assembly where they showcased their cross-curricular learning in Science, Social Studies, and Wellness through the theme of “change.”

Through heartfelt poems, cheerful songs, and engaging video clips, the students guided us through the many ways they’ve explored change this year. They began by illustrating seasonal changes.  They also shared reflections on personal changes, like the excitement of welcoming a new sibling, or moving to a different home.

The assembly then shifted to another important kind of change — money. Students explained how they earned classroom currency.  They applied their learning in a fun, hands-on way by creating a Table Top Market, where they became entrepreneurs and shoppers, selling items to their peers using the money they had earned.

It was a joyful and meaningful celebration of the growth, creativity, and confidence our Grade 1 students have developed this year. Congratulations to all the students, and a heartfelt thank-you to the Grade 1 team for making this learning experience so memorable.

Looking Ahead: Conservation Champions Festival

This Wednesday, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Talerico’s class will be heading to the Conservation Champions Festival at the Calgary Zoo — an exciting opportunity connected to their recent weeklong Open Minds/Campus Calgary program. Their class was selected to present their learning to visitors at the Calgary Zoo, showcasing their commitment to environmental stewardship.

We’re incredibly proud of their work and look forward to sharing highlights from this event in next week’s update.

A message from some Grade 5 students:

We are excited to announce that the Grade 5 team will be holding a Book Drive starting May 12th.

From May 12th to May 16th, students are asked to bring in any gently used books that they are willing to donate toward our book drive. During this week, each class will collect their books and keep a tally of their final total. The class who donates the most books will receive a prize of Freezies for their class. The gently used books that are donated will be resold, and available for students to purchase at lunch time between May 26th to May 30th for $1.00 per book. All the money raised will go toward building our new playground at McKenzie Lake School!

Let’s work together to give great books a new home, help our school, and build a playground that everyone can enjoy.

Start gathering your gently used children’s books and get ready to donate!
