Dear McKenzie Lake Families,

On Wednesday, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Talerico’s class had the exciting opportunity to present at the Conservation Champions Festival held at the Calgary Zoo. Visitors stopping by their booth learned all about bears—an extension of their learning during their week with Open Minds/Campus Calgary. The students were thrilled to share the knowledge they’ve gained, using diagrams and informative trifolds to support their presentations. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to develop oral communication skills in a real-world context, directly tied to the research and inquiry they’ve been engaged in throughout the year. After the upcoming Grade 3 assembly, we look forward to sharing a link to the video they created for the Calgary Zoo.

Meanwhile, our Grade 4 students have been hard at work on a special art project featured in this evening’s Monsters and Heroes Art Show. From 6:30–9:30 p.m., families are invited to visit The New Gallery (208 Centre St S) to view this collaborative exhibition. The show features work from 13 Calgary Board of Education schools, the Alberta University of the Arts, and professional artists. Our Grade 4 students created original Monsters and Heroes drawings, which were then passed along to junior high, high school, university, and professional artists to inspire realistic conceptual interpretations. If you attend the gallery tonight, you’ll be able to see how our Grade 4 drawings were transformed into a final artwork by a professional artist.

*A reminder that Friday, May 16 is a PD Day and there is no school for students.

A message from some Grade 5 students:

Students are able to bring their gently used children’s books to donate to the Book Drive this coming Monday-Thursday. Students will then spend the following week organizing the books, in preparation to sell them for $1.00 each. All the money raised will go toward building our new playground at McKenzie Lake School!
