Dear MLS Families,

Congratulations, McKenzie Lake Families!

We are thrilled to share that we not only met our Terry Fox fundraising goal of $1,600 — we exceeded it! After the final count of cash and online donations, McKenzie Lake School raised an incredible $1,992.75! Thank you to all of our families for your generosity and support. What an amazing accomplishment for our school community!

Orange Shirt Day & Truth and Reconciliation

On Tuesday, students gathered in the gym for our Orange Shirt Day assembly, led by our Grade 5 teachers and students. It was a meaningful opportunity to acknowledge the importance of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

As part of the assembly, students made connections between their learning about Truth and Reconciliation and our school-wide anchor text, The Magical Yet. Students reflected on what they are still learning and shared thoughts such as:

I don’t know everything about Orange Shirt Day… yet.

I don’t know how reconciliation connects to me… yet.

I don’t know what I can do to work towards reconciliation… yet.

At McKenzie Lake School, we are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action, particularly those specific to education. As part of this commitment, our school, along with all CBE schools, has renewed our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

Our McKenzie Lake School Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation for the 2026–2027 school year is:

To actively create opportunities for students, staff and families to learn about and engage in Indigenous land-based and place-based learning.

This commitment connects to TRC Call to Action 62.2.

Demographic Verification Forms

Thank you to all of the families who have completed their school forms. If you have not yet completed these forms, please log into your MyCBE Account to do so.

These forms are required by Alberta Education and Childcare and provide important information for school funding purposes. We appreciate you taking the time to ensure your forms are complete.

Lunch Supervision

If your child stays at school for lunch, please make sure you have registered for Lunch Supervision through your MyCBE Account. The fee will be added to accounts in mid-October.

If you require financial assistance, you can apply for a waiver through your MyCBE Account. Payment options are also available.

Please note that if your child stays at school for lunch and you have not registered for the service, daily attendance will still be recorded and the lunch supervision fee will be automatically assigned to your account in October.

Halloween at McKenzie Lake School

It is officially October, and we know students are already talking about the excitement of Halloween!

On Friday, October 30, students are invited to wear costumes to school if they choose. Please ensure that costumes allow students to safely participate in all school activities, including recess and physical education, and allow them to move safely throughout the school. PM Kindergarten are able to dress up on Thursday, October 29, since they do not attend on October 30.

We ask that weapon-like accessories and any other accessories that are not appropriate for school remain at home and be saved for Halloween night.

Students may wear face paint. If a mask is part of a costume, students will be asked to keep it in their backpack during school hours.

Classes may also participate in some fun Halloween activities throughout the day. We are looking forward to celebrating a fun and memorable Halloween together!

As an allergy-aware school, please do not send whole-class treats to share. We have many students with dietary restrictions and allergies, and we do not allow students to share or distribute food at school.

Sincerely,

Dayna McComish
