Notice Regarding Overflow and Grade Configuration Change for Cranston School

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

We would like to inform you that due to continued enrolment growth Cranston School will be unable to accommodate all the students from the currently designated communities. For this reason, we will be introducing two adjustments over the next two school years that are designed to keep the youngest students attending school close to home while also managing the student populations more evenly across our schools.

  • Effective immediately, enrolment at Cranston School will be capped, and an overflow school will be established for kindergarten to Grade 3 students residing in the Seton community for the current 2023-24 school year.
  • All new registrations for Cranston School, including new registrations currently in SchoolEngage, from kindergarten to Grade 3 students residing in the Seton community will be overflowed to McKenzie Lake School:
  • McKenzie Lake School is in the community of McKenzie Lake at 16210 McKenzie Lake Way SE Calgary, AB T2Z 1L7, phone 403-777-6500
  • There are no changes for students currently attending Cranston School or for new students residing in the Cranston community. Current kindergarten to Grade 5 students attending Cranston School will be able to remain at the school for the current 2023-2024 school year, provided they do not move out of the school boundary. New registrations from students residing in the Cranston community will continue to be accepted.
  • All new kindergarten to Grade 3 students who live in the Seton community and attend the overflow school, McKenzie Lake School, will be placed on a call-back list and offered a place at Cranston School if space becomes available. Grade 4 and 5 students who live in the Seton community will continue to be accepted at Cranston School for the remainder of this school year.
  • The cap on enrolment and overflow to McKenzie Lake School will be in place for kindergarten to Grade 4 students residing in the Seton community for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.
  • Effective for the 2024-25 school year, Cranston School will change from a kindergarten to Grade 5 to a kindergarten to Grade 4 configuration.
  • This means current Grade 4 students will attend Dr. George Stanley School for Grade 5 in the 2024-25 school year.
  • Dr. George Stanley School is in the community of Cranston at 585 Cranston Dr SE Calgary, AB T3M 0J4, phone 403-817-3556
  • There are no changes to Sibylla Kiddle School, the other elementary school in the Cranston community.

Why are these changes happening?

There have been continuous registrations for Cranston School, and there is no additional space to accommodate the growing student population. For this reason, changes must be put in place to ensure the school remains at its capacity and for the safety of students and staff.

What is a call-back list?

If space becomes available in Cranston School during the school year, that space will be offered to students on the call-back list who are currently attending the designated overflow school, McKenzie Lake School. Families will be notified by their school if space becomes available.

Students remain on the call-back list while they attend the designated overflow school. Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the Cranston School boundary or transfer from their designated overflow school. Any new registrations received for the 2023-24 school year will be added to the call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration.

The lottery process will be followed for kindergarten to Grade 4 for the 2024-25 school year and beyond. For more details on how we determine priority, please visit our website.

We will make every effort to keep siblings together at a single school. Families with a kindergarten or Grade 4 student who is unsuccessful in the lottery and have a sibling who is already attending Cranston School may choose to register all children at the overflow McKenzie Lake School.

How do I register for school next year?

Kindergarten registration for the 2024-25 school year begins on Jan. 15, 2024. New registrations submitted before the lottery deadline of 12 p.m. (noon) on Feb. 13, 2024, will be included in the lottery draws. All registrations received after noon on Feb. 13, 2024, will be added to the callback list (based on the appropriate priority level) in the order they are received.

All new registrations, including students attending other schools or an Alternative or Language program, will need to register at Cranston School prior to the lottery deadline.

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated or overflow school if they live beyond the walk zone. Please note that transportation fees apply to overflow situations as well. Families must visit Busing & Transportation for important information on transportation services. Families must register for transportation if they want to use the service, using MyCBE.

In the CBE and across the city, we are experiencing a school bus driver shortage that may impact the mode of service provided. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible and working with our partners to restore reliability to transportation services.
