Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the City of Calgary continues to grow, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is committed to providing strong and stable learning environments that keep peers together, while working to alleviate enrolment pressures.

Why am I receiving this notice?

According to CBE records, you are living in the New Brighton Community, and your child(ren) or current school may be impacted by the designation changes outlined in this notice.

What is changing?

Effective the 2026-27 school year, New Brighton School will no longer need to overflow students. The school will have enough space for all students living in the New Brighton community. There will also not be a lottery for new students for the 2026-27 school year onward.

For several years New Brighton School was full, and many students had to be temporarily designated to McKenzie Lake School. Enrolment in the New Brighton attendance area has now stabilized.

Please note the following for elementary aged students living in the community of New Brighton:

  • All new CBE registrations in kindergarten to Grade 5 will be designated to New Brighton School.
  • Current kindergarten students at McKenzie Lake School will automatically have their registration transferred beginning for the 2026-27 school year when their child enters Grade 1.
  • Students entering Grades 2 to 5 in the 2026-27 school year can choose to remain at McKenzie Lake School or transfer to New Brighton School.
  • Families must inform their current principal of their choice by Friday, March 13, 2026 to stay at their current school or transfer to the designated school. Failure to notify the principal of your choice, will result in your child(ren) being automatically designated to the New Brighton School.

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated school if they live beyond the walk zone. Visit Busing & Transportation for more information. Service levels and fees for the 2026-27 school year will be confirmed by May 2026.

Note, current Grade 4 students who choose to stay at McKenzie Lake School for Grade 5 will continue to have access to transportation for the 2026-27 school year to avoid a school transition two years in a row.

All other students living in the New Brighton community choosing to stay at McKenzie Lake School will be considered out-of-attendance area students and may apply for transportation as conditional riders until June 30, 2027, after which time families will need to provide their own transportation.

What if I have more questions?

Please contact your principal if you have questions regarding these changes.

If you still have questions or require additional information, please contact the Area 5 office at Area5@cbe.ab.ca or 403-777-8412 (extension 0).
